William Marshal (1147–1219) is regarded as one of the greatest knights of the Middle Ages. In countless tournaments he won victories, gained fame and fortune, and served several kings of England. Even in his lifetime he was celebrated as “the greatest knight who ever lived”.
This coin series, consisting of 3 issues, traces the path of a man who embodied the chivalric virtues like no other: courage, honor and loyalty.
The second issue depicts William Marshal in sword fighting, another crowning discipline of knightly competitions. Once again, we experience the duel from his personal perspective, framed by his family coat of arms and the cross of the Knights Templar, the order to which he belonged. The sword in his hand, he faces his opponent, while the cheering tournament crowd can be seen in the background.
Fine details of the armor, weapons and arena give the design a strikingly realistic atmosphere. The edge bears his official title in micro-lettering. The 1-oz silver coin is limited to only 750 pieces worldwide.
