The Tower Bridge in London was opened in 1894 after a construction period of eight years. Its name comes from the Tower of London which is situated on the northern bank of the bridge. A characteristic of this bridge over the Thames is the possibility to raise both equal bascules to allow river traffic to pass. Today the Thames in the western city region is only used for tourism. Therefore the bridge is only raised about three times a day.
