The construction of the Sagrada Família, which is incomplete to this day, began in 1882 according to the Antoni Gaudí’s plans. Since 2005 the church has belonged to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and is supposed to be completed
by about 2026.
The reason for the lenghty building phase is that the labour is only financed by donations and entrance fees. Gaudí himself worked on the church for 43 years, the last 15 of these he dedicated solely to this venture. It quickly became apparent that a fast completion was not possible. When confronted, Gaudí replied: “My client is in no hurry“, referring to God.
The Sagrada Família is being built in honour of the Holy Family (hence the name), therefore, for Jesus of Nazareth, his mother Maria and his foster-father Joseph.
