Three additional, officially licensed issues complete the 2016 WWF collection. Mountain Gorillas are critically endangered with only 900 individuals surviving in the central African highlands. The portrait of a proud silverback sitting among fern leaves is thus a very appropriate motif to raise awareness about the vulnerability of nature.
Next up is the Lady’s Slipper, an orchid native to Europe and Asia. Lady’s Slipper has become increasingly rare in many parts of its range due to habitat loss, overgrazing and uprooting. The marvelous flower is now protected in several countries. This WWF coin is a beautiful homage and a far superior souvenir than a wild picked specimen.
Rounding off the 2016 collection is a Green Sea Turtle gracefully floating over a coral reef populated by an array of tropical fish. The charismatic turtles are endangered through hunting, egg collecting and Pollution.
