Marine Life Protection is one of the longest running commemorative coin series in the world. With the first coins issued in 1992, the series has seen over 50 releases to date featuring tropical marine creatures and exotic mermaid designs that changed each year. The penultimate issues, before the series winds up in 2017, feature the Coral Hind.
This small grouper grows to 50 centimetres and is a common reef dweller in the Indo- Pacific. The beautifully coloured grouper is portrayed against a delicate gorgonian coral inhabited by a seahorse, squirrel fish and butterfly fish. For the first time in the series, the silver coin uses smartminting© to attain unparalleled relief height on the obverse and reverse designs.
