The Swallowtail Butterfly (Papilio machaon) adorns the already existent third version of this 3D technique – another beautiful butterfly which seems to be flying away with the coin.
The Papilio Machaon is one of the most common butterflies still alive in Europe. Its wingspan extends up to 75 mm. It has very delicately formed wings which are patterned black and yellow. On its hind wings the butterfly is marked with red eyespots. In Europe the Swallowtail butterfly has several flight times (generations) which last from April to September. It is not only widespread in Europe but also in Asia. In North America several subspecies are found.
Even as a caterpillar, the developing butterfly already displays a beautiful colour combination. After a period of approximately four weeks, the metamorphosis begins. During this biological process the caterpillar pupates. Finally, the fully-grown butterfly slips out of the cocoon.
